Plantas usadas no emagrecimento

Abstract

Nowadays, particularly in developed countries, obesity is increasingly worrisome, as such, its treatment and prevention are a subject of great relevance. Current treatment available can be effected by various means:  Bariatric surgery;  Drugs;  Plants; In the lasts years, the advancement of technical-scientific knowledge of quality and efficiency characteristics of plant-based medicines, allied to a greater understanding of human physiology, has placed the field of natural bioactive products in a prominent position. Therefore, the general population, with the growing desire of attaining a healthy lifestyle, has been increasing its interest in natural products and “plant-based products”. In Portugal and Europe, these products may be commercialized as medicine or food supplements. However, legislation over medicines has a high number of requirements, that makes it preferable to sell as a food supplement, because as it has fewer requirements, selling these products is both quicker and cheaper, also it can be dispensed at herbal shops and related stores as they do not require qualified health professionals to dispense. Phytotherapy constitutes, nowadays, as a market area in development, of legal recognition and public health repercussion. Allied to the relevance of themes such as obesity and phytotherapy and having in consideration of the continuous evolution of technical-scientific knowledge, it was selected the following plants used in weight loss:  Citrus aurantifolia;  Citrus aurantium;  Cuminum cyminum;  Hoodia gordonii;  Ilex paraguariensis;  Magnolia officinalis;  Morus alba;  Panax ginseng. Relatively to these plants, a research was effected on current knowledge relating to their characteristics: composition, indication of use; toxicology and adverse effects; medicinal plants-medicines interaction and resulting clinical consequences; origin; difficulty in acquiring; and usage.
