Plantas usadas no emagrecimento

Abstract

Nowadays, obesity is the most widespread nutricional disease in the world. This disease is normally a component of the metabolic syndrome which is caracterized by conditions as dyslipidemia, hypertension, hyperglycemia and others. In Portugal, the only weight loss medicine approved by the portuguese National Institute of pharmacy and medicine is orlistato. However, it has a low popularity dued to common adverse effects, which often overlap the beneficial effects. By the other hand, it’s an expensive medicine and it isn’t within the reach of the majority of the population. Therefore, there has been an increased number of alternative investigations that search for a more safe, effective and acessible solution. That turned into a rise of the herbal supplements popularity dued to them being safer and due to their natural origin. In this article, an identification and study of twenty diferent species which are present in many supplements found in the portuguese market was carried out. Those species range from the most tradicional e known ones, such as green tea, pineapple and coffee, to the recente and uprising ones such as artichoke, graviola and guarana. Their characteristics, metabolism, effectiveness, adverse effects and counterindications are analyzed throughout this paper. It’s easily observable that the offer of this products is quite diversified in terms of dosage forms, beneficial effects and costs. Adding to that, few or none adverse effects were registered. Therefore, it’s concluded that herbal dietary supplements are an excellent alternative to tradicional medicine, with great results for anyone who needs to lose weight, no matter the reason. With that in mind, the pharmacist knowledge about species with potencial use in weight loss is of special importance for he or she is the one who is often sought by the population in the search for solutions and advice concerning the treatment of obesity.
