A situação dos suplementos alimentares em Portugal

Abstract

With the emergence of new molecules found in medicinal plants, combined with the fact that the demand for natural products has increased, has created the perfect conditions to increase the desire of man to adopt the ancestors habits of using plants to cure or relieve symptoms of any disease, or simply to prevent any disease. However, both synthetic drugs and natural products may have side effects, and in case of misuse or drug-supplement interaction can cause serious adverse effects to the body. In other words, the thought that is shared by many people that if a product is natural, it will never damage the organism is completely wrong. Everything must be weighted, and it is imperative not only when we are taking some drug or a supplement, to consider the benefit / risk! In addition, we are faced with another issue, in particular, before some drug can enter the market, its needed to submit it into a series of quality tests, efficacy and safety. In the case of nutritional supplements, its commercialization in the Portuguese market only requires a notification to the DGAV with the label of the product, which this lack of oversight of these products may lead to a threat of public health. In this thesis, will be analyzed the reasons for the consumption of nutritional supplements, both for adolescents and elite athletes. Encompassing the precautions to be taken in each case and the type of advice that the pharmacist must perform when dispensing certain nutritional supplements.
