The pattern tile design employs both geometric and organic shapes. Its pattern consists of one or more elements based on principles of form, such as repetition, rotation, symmetry, gradation, among others. In this article we will discuss aspects related to the shape and composition structure of the tiles, in a nineteenth century pattern common to Brazil and Portugal, present in the façade of a building in the city of Rio de Janeiro. We will talk about the design principles that govern it – from the standard to the whole of the façade – and which allow us to visualize different effects: drawing in detail and that of a uniformly textured carpet, according to the distance established between the observer and the tile, or its set
