Citotoxicidade e mutagenicidade do metilmercúrio

Abstract

Environmental contamination by methylmercury (MeHg) is a serious public health issue, since the human population is severely exposed through the ingestion of fish and shellfish. This organic compound is gradually accumulated in the food chain, which directly or indirectly affects the human health. Recently, there has been an increasing interest in MeHg, looking to investigate the underlying toxicity mechanisms by wich the cardiotoxicity, nephrotoxicity, teratogenicity, neurotoxicity, and immunotoxicity effects are induced. Evidence suggests that the main target of this organic compound is the Central Nervous System (SNC), wich is particularly vulnerable during development. In particular, pregnant women are in bigger risk due to the irreversible damage in the neurobehavioral development of their fetuses, even in the absence of symptoms of the pregnant women. MeHg is long known as being cytotoxic and potentially mutagenic, however its induced-toxicity mechanisms remain to be fully characterized. In spite of all the publish studies the understanding of these mechanisms maintain particular importance in areas such as the mutagenic evaluation. Regarding the human populations whose diet is rich in contaminated fish and shellfish, it must be taken a faster and more effective risk analysis by the concern organizations, since they are at increased risk of exposure to MeHg.
