Abstract

A presença de bactérias acidogénicas na cavidade oral tem um papel fundamental na etiologia da cárie dentária. A cavidade oral constitui um excelente meio para o crescimento de bactérias que, na sequência do seu metabolismo, produzem ácidos que afectam as estruturas dos dentes. A utilização de compostos substitutos do açúcar nomeadamente o xilitol parece provocar uma redução de incidência de cárie dentária, através da inibição metabólica das referidas bactérias, bem como o aumento da remineralização e diminuição do ataque ácido ao esmalte.
