A Clepsydra libertada

Abstract

Camilo Pessanha’s poetry has been differently received according to editorial decisions inflicted upon it throughout the twentieth-century. The poet didn’t take part on the editing process of his work and the editors had to make choices without his sanction. Due to this poet’s habit of declaiming his poems, some confusion originated as to the best way of editing his poetry, which led poets and friends to propose their own editions: Clepsydra was subject to interpretative complications that came up on its editing process. These editorial deliberations, founded both on prejudices about his life and his literary aesthetics (which were insidiously propagated during the editorial process and of which weren’t the poet’s fault) also greatly influenced the thought and the criticism of this poet’s work. This dissertation also aims at offering some paths to follow and cautions to have in mind when fixing the text and editing Camilo Pessanha’s poetry.
