Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate the in vitro performance of simplified etch-and-rinse and self-etch adhesive systems, with different application protocols. Methods: Four experimental studies were performed (shear bond strength, nanoleakage, Raman microspectroscopy, scanning and transmission electronic microscopy) in order to evaluate five simplified adhesive systems (2 two-step etch-and-rinse systems – Scotchbond 1XT and Solobond M; 2 onestep self-etch systems – Easy Bond and Clearfil S3 Bond Plus; and 1 universal system – Scotchbond Universal, applied with an etch-and-rinse and self-etch approach); three handling protocols (according to manufacturer´s instructions; with two additional adhesive layers; and with an extra hydrophobic adhesive layer) and three aging times (24 h; 6 m; and 18 m). When possible, statistical analysis was performed. Results: Regarding the simplified adhesive systems in study, the results were mostly material-dependent. Considering the application protocol, after 18 months of aging, a better performance was observed when a supplementary hydrophobic layer was applied compared to the other two handling protocols. In the ultramorphological study, the application of the hydrophobic layer and three applications of the adhesive system revealed similar adhesive interfaces, within each adhesive system. Conclusions: An extra hydrophobic adhesive resin proved to be advantageous for the performance of the simplified etch-and-rinse and selfetch adhesive systems studied, over 18 months of aging.
