Abstract

Chub Mackerel (Scomber colias) is a pelagic coastal species, of average size, with a broad geographic distribution that inhabits the warm and temperate waters of the North Atlantic, Mediterranean Sea and adjacent areas. This species has a wide distribution in depth, till 500 m, and can be found in all the continental shelf, upper slope and seamounts. Because of its commercial importance it is indispensable to know and have regular biological information about this species. However, there are still few studies about these populations in the Iberian Peninsula and in the Atlantic area allowing for a formal assessment of its stocks. The main goal of this work is to contribute to the knowledge of the biology of Chub Mackerel (Scomber colias) in the West Portuguese coast. This study was based on a total sample of 1846 fish of both sexes, obtained from the commercial fleet landed in the harbours of Peniche (2012) and Matosinhos (2015). The length range of the fish sampled varies between the classes 17 cm and 42 cm, while the age varies between 0 and 7 years. To validate the periodicity of deposition of the growth rings, the seasonal distribution of the saggitta otoliths type of border was analysed, the majority of the opaque zones being found in spring and summer. The age reading comparison between several readers had a concordance of 55.7% and a coefficient variation of 12,4%. The mean radius of the first age ring in the otoliths varied between 1.35 mm for Matosinhos and 1.59 mm for Peniche, but with relatively high standard deviation values. The weight-length ratio regression parameters for the Peniche sample was q=0.003 and b=3.321, and for the Matosinhos sample q=0.129 and b=2.894. It was not possible to adjust a von Bertalanffy model to the Matosinhos sample. The growth parameters of the Peniche samples was L∞=30.99 cm, K=0.76 year-1 and t0= -1.17.
