Abstract

Granites are rocks essentially composed by quartz, micas and feldspars, the latter being the minerals which, in these rocks, contain more alkalis in their structure and thus, able to release them under specific conditions. Alkali-silica reactions (ASR) are chemical reactions that occur in concrete, between the silica reactive forms that are present in the aggregates and alkalis of the concrete interstitial solution. According to the literature, granite aggregates are considered of slow reaction when used in concrete, indicating that the effects of such reactions are only manifested several years after the construction takes place. However, there is an existence of innumerable structures where granite aggregates were employed that show ASR-related problems. Considering this, a large number of different Portuguese granitic aggregates were studied with the aim of characterizing its potential reactivity. The presence of deformed or microcrystalline quartz causes the reactions to be slower and the feldspars can potentially release alkalis to the interstitial solutions in the concrete, favouring the progression and development of ASR. For evaluating the possibility of alkalis-release, seven different Portuguese granite aggregates were petrographically analysed, with special emphasis on the characterization of the feldspars and the intensity of their alteration. This alteration was quantified combining petrography and microphotographs image analysis. Each aggregate was divided in fractions, according to the observed alteration intensity and alkali-release potential tests, using alkaline solutions were performed, according to the RILEM AAR-8 methodology. A complementary test was also carried out, to evaluate the rocks reactivity, using concrete prisms, which previously underwent accelerated expansion texts. This experiment, named Gel Pat Test, assesses the potential for the formation of silico-alkaline gel. Non-altered and altered granite single feldspar crystals were also subjected to chemical reaction with NaOH to determine if their chemical stability is affected, when placed under similar conditions as the ones found in concrete. Contrary to what’s been described in previous works that used similar procedures, it was proven that the aggregate particles that show more intense alteration evidences are found to release a smaller amount of alkalis. This allowed to also prove that the feldspar, when in chemical conditions similar to the ones which are found within the concrete, can release alkalis into the interstitial solutions. Additionally, this study allowed to establish petrographic and image analysis as important processes for determining the reactivity of an aggregate, allowing an initial expedite classification and selection. Some tests, such as chemical attacks to feldspars and the Gel Pat Test should be further studied, in detail, so that they can be correctly applied to granitic aggregates, as the obtained results weren’t conclusive. It is also emphasized that the combination of different methods is crucial for the correct determination of the aggregates reactivity.
