A satisfação conjugal e o envolvimento paterno

Abstract

The present study focuses on marital satisfaction and father involvement, and has the following objectives: (a) to analyze marital satisfaction in couples, (b) to characterize the father's involvement with the children and with housework, (c) to relate marital satisfaction with father involvement, (d) to relate both marital satisfaction and father involvement with socio-demographic variables. 32 heterosexual couples, parents of primary school children, participated in the study. The EASAVIC (Narciso & Costa, 1996) and the EEP (Simões, Leal, & Maroco, 2010) were used to evaluate, respectively, marital satisfaction and father involvement. A Form was also designed to obtain socio-demographic information and the men and women's perspective on the degree of involvement with the child (care, education and play) and housework. Men and women do not differ significantly in marital satisfaction (Marital Functioning and Love) and men (compared to women) give less importance to their own involvement in child care and education. The father's presence in the daily activities of the child (Presence subscale - EPF) is positively associated with marital satisfaction. Moreover, the woman's marital satisfaction is higher when the man's involvement is greater in housework, and the satisfaction of both increases with greater involvement of the woman in play. With regard to the socio-demographic variables, it may be noted that the number of children is negatively associated with the marital satisfaction of the man (Marital Functioning and Love) and the woman (Marital Functioning), and that the father's involvement in child care tasks is lower in older couples and tends to be higher when the couple has a religious belief (especially the woman). The results are discussed on the basis of literature on the themes under study.
