Abstract

This study is included under the subject of Clinical Supervision, lectured during the initial stage of the nursing course. Its research object is the evaluation of teaching supervisors’ performance on clinical teaching supervision. Because we believe that the supervising activity requires the development of learnings and skills acquired in the course, the aim of our work was to identify training needs as expressed by the various concerns, difficulties, expectations and intentions of the supervisors. In this context we undertook an exploratory-descriptive study of a qualitative nature, in which participated 14 teachers from a Nursing School in Lisbon. The information was collected through a semi-direct interview and using the so-called “significant incident” technique. From the results obtained, we were able to conclude that supervisors play indeed an active role in the students’ learning process, explaining professional reality, calling for the application of acquired knowledge and promoting the development of nursing skills through their practice. As such, supervisors’ tasks are essentially those of a practising nurse, responsible for guiding and encouraging, accompanying, evaluating and certifying, using “training technique” skills. The required nursing “knowledge” appears to be based on an essentially formal academic education, its application in practical terms and on experience. The greatest difficulties encountered are mainly concerned with a feeling of ill preparation for the required task, which is in itself not clearly defined as well as the weaknesses from lack of training. They also reflect the existence of dilemmas and contradictions related with the unawareness and poor acknowledgement of the activity and the lack of pedagogic preparation. The hope for changes is reflected in the development of the educational scope of clinical teaching and in the improvement of teaching through continuous training, pedagogic supervision and guidance.
