Abstract

The cleft lip and palate (CLP) belongs to the group of craniofacial anomalies and leads to functional and aesthetic changes, especially in the middle third of the face. The objective of this work is to perform a review of the narrative literature on the importance of pediatric dentists in the treatment of children with CLP, as a member of a multidisciplinary team. An electronic search was conducted in the PubMed, B-on and Google Scholar databases. This research led to a vast collection of scientific papers in Portuguese, English, and Spanish that were thoroughly analyzed, as well as their references. Further research was carried out in the university’s library books. The etiology of the clefts is still unclear but it is believed that in most cases it is the result of a multifactorial condition. Children with these malformations should initiate treatments at very early ages and be assisted by professionals from various areas throughout their life. Research literature indicates that a specialized multidisciplinary approach is of paramount importance to the harmonious growth and development of these individuals. The pediatric dentist, as a member of the team, has an active and transversal role in the treatment of these children from birth to adulthood, ensuring the maintenance of oral health, which is a pivotal requirement for the success of surgical and rehabilitation procedures.
