Abstract

A perda auditiva nas crianças constitui um obstáculo sério ao seu desenvolvimento e à sua educação, nomeadamente à aquisição da linguagem e das capacidades cognitivas. Crianças com defeitos auditivos devem ser diagnosticadas precocemente e dentro de um período em que ainda seja possível uma reabilitação eficaz. Idealmente todas as crianças com surdez devem ser identificadas antes dos 3 meses de idade para que se possa iniciar intervenção até aos 6 meses. Este período crítico de intervenção prende-se essencialmente com o período de desenvolvimento da vida auditiva e com a necessidade da existência de um estímulo sonoro para a maturação do córtex cerebral. Neste sentido surge o Rastreio Auditivo Neonatal Universal como o melhor método de detecção precoce de perda auditiva. Neste artigo de revisão, pretende-se destacar a importância que Rastreio Auditivo Neonatal Universal adquire para o desenvolvimento da criança e de todos os factores envolvidos neste processo.

The hearing loss on children constitutes a severe obstacle in both their development and education, namely on the acquisition of language and cognitive capacities. Children with hearing flaws must be early diagnosed and within a period in which rehabilitation is possible. Ideally, every child with deafness must be identified before turning 3 months old in order to initiate intervention until 6 months old. This critical intervention period is primarily linked to both the developing stages of the auditory pathway and to the need of a sound stimulus to assure the cerebral cortex stimulation. In the light of the above, newborn hearing screening arises as the best method to detect premature hearing loss. This revision article intends to point out the importance that the newborn hearing screening assumes for the development of the child and all the factors involved in this process.
