Abstract

This thesis develops a path through a set of works by Bernardo Carvalho and Ruy Duarte de Carvalho, articulating two main axes: epistolary literature and travel literature. The reflexive dimension of the book is read in the light of the problems that literary writing shares with ethnographic writing, discussed in the first part. In this discussion, the figure of the letter and, more specifically, of the lost letter, becomes prominent. The issues raised by the examined novels – Os Papéis do Inglês and Nove Noites – are examined on the basis of a questioning of the book and of the notion of authorial responsibility that they outline. In the second part, devoted to As Paisagens Propícias and Mongólia, these issues are articulated with the topic of travel and with the reflection on space and landscape. Thus, the figure of the map-book is added to the letter-book. These two figurations of writing aim at addressing a central issue: the relationship between writing project and result, that is, between imagined book and written book. I will propose that this issue, particularly evident at the end of each of the examined novels, reflects a general problem, i.d., the relationship between theory and case, the inadequacy of the latter to the former and their complementarity.
