Psychological needs of forcibly displaced families and systemic intervention

Abstract

The purpose of this investigation is to explore the perceived need for psychological aid, as well as the experiences associated with being forcibly displaced, in refugee and asylum seeking families, from countries of the “New Middle East”. Additionally, the present study aims at exploring the different levels of experiences which contribute to the emergence of psychological disorders, in light of the model of psychological reactions to refugee trauma proposed by Bryant, Nickerson, Silove, and Steel (2011). A quantitative approach was used to gather information concerning sociodemographical variables, contextual factors, and the capacity for resilience. This data was subjected to an analysis of frequency. A quantitative approach was used to gather information regarding the perceived need for psychological aid, as well as the experiences associated with being forcibly displaced. This information was analysed using the NVIVO (10.0 version for Windows) software. The results showed an association between the variables of the study and their subcategories. There was concordance regarding the perceived need for psychological aid and openness to this practice. Several clinical implications can be taken from this investigation, which are presented in the conclusion.
