Abstract

The aim of this laboratory study was to evaluate the influence of zirconia ceramics on the polymerization of a light-polymerized resin luting agent. It was also evaluated the ceramics light transmission. Three different zirconia ceramics were evaluated: Lava (3M ESPE), Zirconia Traslucent (Zirkonzahn) and Zirconia Prettau (Zirkonzahn). From each ceramic were made 0,6 mm thickness discs. The disks were divided in groups according to their shade: not-shaded, A1 shaded and A4 shaded. To achieve the proposed aims, light-polimerized resin luting agent specimens were made with Variolink II Base (Ivoclar Vivadent). The specimen’s polymerization was performed indirectly through the ceramic discs previously prepared. All the specimens were cured during 10 seconds in contact with the ceramic with a light-emitting diode Bluephase 20i (Ivoclar Vivadent). The degree of conversion was indirectly evaluated through the measurement of Vickers microhardness. For each group was determined the microhardness medium value and performed the nonparametric test Kruskal Wallis with a 5% statistical significance. The evaluation of the light transmission was performed through light intensity radiometer (Kerr) measurement and transmittance spectrophotometric analysis (Thermo Electron Corporation). Vickers microhardness ranged between 4,86 Kg/mm2, achieved by Lava A1 and 12,44 Kg/mm2 achieved by Prettau. Light transmission measured by radiometer ranged between 100 mW/cm2 achieved by Zirkonzahn A4 and 400 mW/cm2, achieved by Lava, Zirkonzahn and Prettau. According to the statistic analysis results, it was concluded that the zirconia ceramic type and it’s translucency influence the resin luting agent microhardness. Besides being chemically equal, the evaluated zirconia ceramics light transmission differed.
