Bruxismo na criança

Bruxismo na criança

Abstract

Bruxism is an involuntary parafunctional habit which is characterized by stereotyped and continuous movements with teeth grinding and/or clenching, resultant of the rhythmic contraction of the masseter muscles. It is believed that nocturnal bruxism is more common during childhood; however the exact prevail is inaccurate and overstated. The etiology is considered multifactorial, being distinguished peripheral (morphological) and central (physio-pathological and psychosocial) factors. The diagnosis is based on dental wear and on parents reports of teeth grinding or clenching episodes. Complications include dental wear, temperomandibular dysfunction, changes in head posture, morning pain and fatigue of the jaw muscles, headache and neck pain. The therapeutic measures are various, including the use of relaxation drops, behavior modification (psychological) and pharmaceutical. This parafunction presents association with other diseases, such as upper airway's obstruction, Down syndrome, Rett syndrome and cerebral paralysis. The aim of this work is to review the literature about bruxism in children, focusing on the prevail, etiology, diagnosis, signs and symptoms, possible treatments to parafunction and its relation with pathologies.
