Ligas em ortodontia

Abstract

During the last years we have witnessed an exponential increase of materials and techniques used in dentistry. In orthodontics, as in other areas of dentistry, the diversity and the constant appearance of new products implies knowledge of the qualities and benefits of one material over another. Some of these materials present similar mechanical and physical properties. As a result, the selection of the material to use, and one that represents the best clinical option will be based not only on scientific evidence of literature but also in the habit and familiarity that the clinician acquired daily in clinical practice. Of the many materials used in orthodontics, those consisting of metal alloys continue to be widely used and studied. In this work the main metal alloys used in the course of orthodontic treatment were addressed, as well as their main clinical applications and indications. Some comparative studies and clinical implications related with these alloys were discussed, such as mutagenicity, cytotoxicity, allergenic potential, corrosion and reaction when exposed to fluoride material.
