Toxicidade associada a plantas medicinais : plantas com alcalóides

Abstract

As plantas medicinais são as mais antigas formas de prática medicinal na humanidade, no tratamento, cura e prevenção de doenças, sendo assim consideradas o suporte da medicina há milhares de anos. Os alcaloides representam um grupo de substâncias que, ao logo dos tempos, influenciaram grande parte da história médica, política e social da humanidade. São conhecidos mais de 5000 alcaloides com atividade biológica, representando cerca de 20% das substâncias naturais com propriedades terapêuticas. Estes compostos apresentam uma importante atividade terapêutica, no entanto estão associadas a um elevado nível de toxicidade. Assim, baseada em artigos de revisão e de investigação, como também em livros, esta revisão bibliográfica aborda plantas medicinais que possuem na sua constituição alcaloides e traz ao debate a sua atividade terapêutica e os riscos a eles associados.
