Acesso ao mercado dos medicamentos biossimilares

Abstract

Em 2013, a International Diabetes Federation estimou que 8,3% dos adultos no mundo - 382 milhões de pessoas - têm diabetes e que este número tenderá a aumentar, ultrapassando os 592 milhões em menos de 25 anos. Segundo um relatório emitido pela IMS Health, uma das principais despesas de grande parte dos países são os tratamentos para a diabetes, havendo por isso uma crescente necessidade em elaborar métodos que permitam reduzir as despesas relacionadas com a mesma. As patentes de uma grande variedade de biofármacos, incluindo análogos de insulinas, estão a expirar brevemente, proporcionando uma oportunidade às empresas para desenvolver fármacos semelhantes a esses medicamentos biológicos originais - denominados biossimilares - e às entidades pagadoras para reduzir despesas. As insulinas biossimilares apresentam o potencial de reduzir os custos dos tratamentos da diabetes - aumentando a variedade de insulinas disponíveis no mercado e a acessibilidade dos doentes ao tratamento - tornando-as por isso comercialmente atrativas para um grande número de empresas e entidades pagadoras. Ainda que recentemente tenha sido aprovada a primeira insulina biossimilar na Europa - a insulina Abasria? -, as insulinas biossimilares terão de continuar a superar inúmeras barreiras regulamentares, corresponder a uma extensa variedade de exigências comerciais e ser capaz de competir, não só com as insulinas já estabelecidas no mercado, como também com as novas insulinas de modo a garantir a sua penetração no mercado atual.
