Suscetibilidade aumentada às infeções por neisseria meningitidis

Abstract

Even though the incidence of meningococcal disease has decreased in recent years, Neisseria meningitidis remains an important cause of meningitis and septicaemia. Certain health conditions may be associated with an increased vulnerability to infections. Concerning Nm, some immunodeficiencies, such as those of the complement system’s proteins or antibody’s polymorphisms, may be the core feature of increased infection and severity rates. Such immunologic diseases remain underdiagnosed, possibly due to the lack of access to medical services. The timely diagnosis of such situations is essential for management, prevention and improvement of the quality of life of such patients. The goals of this article are to summarize the clinical manifestations and epidemiology of Nm infection, review the currently available data concerning the relationship between primary immunodeficiencies and the increased susceptibility to infection by this agent and the treatment for such cases.
