Hemoglobinopatias e malária : obstáculos com potencial futuro

Abstract

Almost 70 years since Haldane's Malaria Hypothesis, there are still roads to uncover in the relationship between haemoglobinopathies and Malaria. Today we only understand some of the mechanisms that enable this natural selection. The need for further understanding of this process urges new investigations, which could be the way to develop new therapeutics and new preventive methods. However, regardless this boom of crescent knowledge, we cannot forget the most important factor on this long road: the human being. It is crucial that those innovations reach the ones that need them the most, the ones that live in endemic areas.

Passados quase 70 anos da proposta de Haldane, existem ainda caminhos por desvendar nesta relação entre as hemoglobinopatias e a Malária. Hoje conhecemos apenas alguns dos mecanismos que permitem esta seleção natural. Estes novos conhecimentos impulsionam novas investigações: pode ser este o caminho para novas terapêuticas e novos métodos preventivos. No entanto, apesar do crescente conhecimento, importa não descurar o mais importante neste longo caminho: a pessoa humana. É crucial que tais inovações cheguem aos que mais delas precisam, às populaçõoes que vivem nas zonas endémicas.
