Relação entre bruxismo e cefaleias

Abstract

Sleep bruxism and headaches are two conditions that are very common in the general population and they have a negative impact on the life quality. The main goal of this review is to evaluate the possible association between bruxism and headaches, as well as learning the main features of each disease. Currently, there is not enough scientific evidence to assess the relationship between bruxism and headaches. Nonetheless, it is a topic that has gained importance through the data found by the scientific community. Some studies show that the prevalence of sleep bruxism is higher among individuals with primary headaches, mainly with migraine. There is also evidence supporting that sleep bruxism, temporomandibular disorders and headaches are related comorbidities. However, more studies are needed with well defined and standardized protocols in order to reach more credible results. In conclusion, it is very important to do more research in this area to better understand the mechanisms that trigger and associate these two conditions. The Dentist, during clinical practice, should not be indifferent to the possible association between these two diseases and should conduct a thorough evaluation of symptoms and, if necessary, refer the patient to a doctor specialized in neurology, in order to give the best possible care.
