O Licopeno na Prevenção do Envelhecimento Cutâneo : Ficção ou Realidade?

Abstract

The skin, one of the most important organs of the human body, has been the subject of several dermopharmaceutical studies regarding strategies for prevention and treatment of skin aging. The skin aging process can be explained by two mechanisms: on one hand, intrinsic or chronological aging which is related to the physiological and unavoidable changes that skin undergoes with time and on the other hand, extrinsic aging which involves aggressors that accelerate the natural process of skin aging. Photoaging is the major responsible for early aging and severe disorders of the skin. Regardless of aging mechanisms, natural or accelerated, the accumulation of free radicals and oxidative cellular stress are the main causes of physical and functional changes in the aged skin. In this context, it became relevant to study antioxidant substances with effective action in maintaining healthy skin. This monograph reviews scientific studies on the antioxidant role of lycopene and its mechanism of action for prevention and treatment of aging skin. Finally anti-aging dietary supplements are introduced regarding their benefits and adverse effects and the role of the community pharmacist in the dispensing and counseling of this type of product is also discussed.
