Hemograma: interesse diagnóstico, interpretação e exames complementares

Abstract

The complete blood count (CBC) has been for many decades the method of choice for screening of a variety of diseases, being one of the most frequently requested clinical laboratory tests, both in hospital and in private practice. This review presented a concise and systematic review of the CBC, with detailed explanation of all the calculated indices and their laboratory interest. Reference and pathological values for all indices were presented and further complemented with the possible diseases in which these changes occur. A classification of the most frequent and important pathologies in red series, platelets and white series was also made, followed up by all laboratory findings that characterize them and additional tests that allows physicians to reach a differential diagnosis. The CBC is undoubtedly essential in the diagnosis and monitoring of various diseases therapy. Nevertheless, new technologies have helped to better characterize these diseases, allowing to further complement the information provided by CBC and enabling patients´ access to specific pathology therapy.
