Abstract

Objective: To quantify dentin permeability of adhesive systems currently used and analyze the influence of an hydrophobic resin layer on that permeability. Materials and Methods: Forty-six teeth were prepared and randomly divided into 4 groups (n = 10), according to the adhesive system used. All specimens were subjected to pulpal pressure with the subsequent application of the adhesive system and measurement of the permeability. After application an hydrophobic resin layer new permeability measurements were performed. The remaining 6 samples were used to characterize the permeability through dentin surface with polyvinylsiloxane replicas, which were seen in the scanning electron microscope. Data were treated with MANOVA followed by Tukey post-hoc statistical tests, with 5% significance level. Results: The permeability was significantly lower in the group with self-etch Futurabond U than in groups with etch-and-rinse adhesive systems (p<0.05), after adhesive and after hydrophobic resin layer application. After application of a hydrophobic resin layer there was a decrease in permeability values in all adhesive systems but the group with Scotchbond 1XT had the higher permeability values compared to the groups with Easybond and Futurabond U self-etch (p<0.05). No other statistically significant differences were found. Conclusions: The universal adhesive Futurabond U when applied according to the self-etch strategy yield lower dentin permeability than with the etch-and-rinse strategy. An hydrophobic resin layer lead to a reduction in dentin permeability with all the adhesives tested.
