Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this study is to evaluate how light irradiation time and translucently of lithium dissilicate ceramics effect the polymerization of a resin luting cement. Materials and Methods: IPS e.max ceramic discs were made from ingots HT A4 and MO4. Photopolymerization was performed through these discs in different times, 10, 20, 30 and 40 seconds with a LED (1400mW/cm2). Five evaluations were made per group (n=5), The evaluation of the degree of conversion was performed by Knoop microhardness tests immediately after the polymerization process. Data was analyzed with a two-way ANOVA followed by the Tukey post-hoc test. Statistical testing was performed at a 5% level of significance. The control group was realized by direct fotopolymerization, during 60 seconds. Results: The data reveals a statistically significant difference (p<0.05) between the duration of irradiation and the hardness of the formed cement. No statistically significant was identified between the translucency of the ceramic discs and the hardness of the formed cement. There was also no correlation between the duration of irradiation and the translucency of the ceramic disks. Conclusions: This in vitro study identifies that longer irradiation times lead to a greater degree of polymerization of the resin luting cement irrespective of the translucency of the lithium dissilicate ceramic.
