Doença inflamatória pélvica e fertilidade

Abstract

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) is an infectious disease of the upper genital tract which affects mostly sexually active young women and has a known influence on fertility. The purpose of this paper was to review the most recent literature on this issue. In addition to the known role that Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae have, other microorganisms have been implicated in PID’s etiology, possibly having a role in its treatment. Although the most common infertility causes associated with PID are tubal occlusion and hydrosalpinx, other determinant mechanisms such as pelvic adhesions, oocyte quality and microorganism-related factors must be considered. This is a topic still being researched.
