Abstract

O cancro colorretal é um dos cancros mais comuns mundialmente, que apresenta uma mortalidade elevada. Ao longo dos últimos anos, vários têm sido os estudos de investigação no âmbito da prevenção deste cancro, nomeadamente na criação de programas oportunísticos de rastreio, pela evidência existente de que é possível, através de métodos eficazes de rastreio, prevenir o aparecimento desta neoplasia. São variados os testes disponíveis para o rastreio desta neoplasia, que apresentam diferenças nas suas vantagens e desvantagens, sensibilidade e especificicade. Existem fortes dados a favor da eficácia do ácido acetiilsalicílico em baixas doses na diminuição da incidência e mortalidade por cancro colorectal. Os seus mecanismos antineoplásicos ainda não estão bem definidos, sendo sugeridas ações tanto dependentes como independentes da inibição da COX. Contudo o seu papel na quimioprevenção do cancro colorretal é ainda controverso, dado os riscos implicados ao seu uso regular e prolongado.

Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers in the World and it has a high rate of mortality. Many scientific studies have been conducted regarding colorectal cancer prevention, for the past several years, because there is good evidence that this cancer can be prevented with a strong screening program. There are many tests available to do this screening, with different advantages, sensibilities and specificities. Acetilsalicilic acid use at low-doses, has been shown to decrease colorectal cancer incidence and mortality. However, its antineoplasic mechanisms have not been clearly established yet. Evidence suggests that there are COX-related and non-COX-related pathways. Acetil salicic’s role in colorectal cancer chemoprevention is still controversial, partially due to the risks associated with its regular and prolonged use.
