Alcoolismo e perturbação da ansiedade

Abstract

Background: Anxiety disorders are among the most prevalent psychiatric disorders, affecting about 28.8% of individuals throughout life. Alcohol is the substance most commonly used in the general population. This review aims to examine the relationship between anxiety disorder and consumption of alcohol, as well as the ramifications that come from this interaction. Methods: Review of selected articles from the electronic databases PubMed (Medline) and Google Scholar. Results: There are two theoretical proposals concerning the relationship of substance use disorders with anxiety, the first proposal is that anxiety promotes alcoholism (self-medication), and the second is that alcoholism promotes anxiety. Conclusion: It is recognized that the reduction of anxiety is one of the key factors justifying the consumption of alcohol, but on the other hand, often the anxiety disorders could be caused from a situation of chronic use of alcohol. The evidence suggests that treating anxiety in the context of alcoholism does not influence abstinence rates or a reduction in the consumption of alcohol.
