Escoliose no contexto de distrofia muscular

Abstract

Neuromuscular scoliosis is a relatively prevalent disease, being the second most common type of scoliosis. The majority of the curves found in neuromuscular scoliosis is “C-shaped” kind, and there is usually sacrum involvement and pelvic obliquity. In muscular distrophy, scoliosis has a truly significant role in patients’ life quality, as it interferes mainly with respiratory function and with the ability to walk properly. The right timing for a surgical approach in these patients’ remains a highly controversial matter, however, the majority of the authors claims that it should be done when the curve reaches 20 to 30º or when the patient is no longer able to walk. Since pre and post-operative complications are important in this type of pathology, an analysis was made regarding the clinical files of eight patients with neuromuscular scoliosis, where the majority had a post operatory complication. A literature review was also prepared to compare our results.
