Conflito trabalho-família e qualidade relacional : efeitos individuais e na díade conjugal

Abstract

In the context of modern Western society, where both elements of marital dyad are employed and share family tasks and responsibilities, the incompatibility between the worlds of work and family is a prominent reality. The difficulty in managing the two worlds is reflected in the phenomenon labelled Work-Family Conflict. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between work-family conflict and perceived relationship quality by spouses at the individual and dyadic levels. The sample consisted of 380 married participants, with children between 7 and 18 years, living in the metropolitan areas of Lisbon and Coimbra. Participants individually filled out the Work-Family Conflict Scale (WFCS, Carlson, Kacmar and Williams, 2000; Portuguese adaptation of Vieira, Lopez and Matos, 2014) and the Inventory Quality Relational Perceived Components (ICQRP, Fletcher, Simpson and Thomas, 2000; Portuguese adaptation of Crespo, 2007). A multivariate analysis of variance was performed to examine sex differences in the experience of the types of conflict (interference work-family and interference-working family based on time, the tension and behavior) and a paired samples t-test to assess sex differences in perceived relational quality. The results showed that men experienced more work-family interference based on behavior and more work-family interference based on behavior than women and also that they perceived better relationship quality than women. Two structural equation models allowed to test the individual and dyadic associations between work-family conflict and perceived relational quality. At the individual level, relationship quality perceived by men was negatively influenced by his work-family interference and the relationship quality perceived by women was negatively influenced by work-family interference. At the dyadic level, the relationship quality perceived by men was negatively influenced by the work-family interference experienced by women and the relationship quality perceived by women was negatively influenced by the work-family interference experienced by men.
