Virtude e Democracia

Abstract

Uma ciência fundada sobre o esquecimento sistemático e deliberado do seu passado está, pace Whitehead, condenada a reconstruí-lo de forma arbitrária. A validade desta asserção - que pretendemos ver demonstrada nesta Dissertação de Mestrado - transcende, cremos, as divisões disciplinares que separam as teorias sociológicas das teorias políticas. Em ambos os campos científicos, e ao contrário do que Robert Merton sugere, a história da teoria e a sua “substância sistemática” não são domínios analíticos autónomos. De facto, a nossa estratégia teórico-metodológica assenta sobre o pressuposto de que a forma como se reconstroem contribuições passadas constitui um elemento indissociável do próprio processo de construção teórica. Por outro lado, o modo como as teorias sociais e políticas reconstroem o seu passado reflecte a sua natureza epistemológica. A distância que separa uma concepção cumulativa e contínua da história de uma visão fragmentária é a mesma que separa o positivismo do pós-positivismo. Isto significa portanto que, em sociologia como em ciência política, a teoria e a história da teoria não são mais do que momentos diferentes de uma estratégia teórica, cujo carácter epistemológico decorre, em grande parte, da forma como os articula.
