Abstract

Asthma is the most common chronic disease, with an estimated 300 million affected individuals worldwide. Asthma is one of the most frequent causes of hospitalization and absenteeism in several countries. This study seeks to determine whether there is impact of asthma in the labor and school absenteeism. We also intend to identify which factors, sociodemographic and clinical, are associated with labor and school absenteeism by adjusting logistic regression models. Between March 2011 and March 2012, it was conducted a study entitled National Study of Prevalence and Asthma Control Auto Referred in Children and Adults, part of the AIRE-P project: National Prevalence and Asthma Control, based on a telephone survey on the disease control. This investigation yielded a final sample of 401 asthmatic with active asthma. For the analysis of labor absenteeism was selected from the final sample those who had 16 or more years and whose principal occupation was the exercise of a profession. For the analysis of school absenteeism was considered from the final sample asthmatics whose principal occupation was being students without any restrictions on age. The asthma control groups were defined according to the World Program for Asthma - Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA). In the group of workers no association between asthma control and absenteeism was found, we identified as factors associated with labor absenteeism, the use of health care, tobacco smoke (triggering factor of asthma attacks) and the education level of the asthmatic. The chance of missing work of an asthmatic who has asthma partly controlled/uncontrolled increases 61% when compared to the chance of missing work of an asthmatic who has controlled asthma. In the group of students we found a moderate association between asthma control and school absenteeism and we identified as factors associated with absenteeism, age and the use of daily medication. We observed that the chance of missing school of an asthmatic who has asthma partly controlled/uncontrolled is 3,48 times higher relative to the chance of missing school of an asthmatic with controlled asthma.
