Abstract

Abstract: This dissertation is based on the reading of the tale “Uma aventura secreta do marquês de Bradomín” (“The Marquis of Bradomín’s secret adventure”). This narrative text points out some issues related to Portuguese contemporary fiction, such as the construction of the leading role’s character, varying between being real and being fictional; it also points out the question of female authorship, as well as the importance of what it is said and the importance of silence. The female character presents her real story shared with Marquis of Bradomín and how the meanings change according to time and discursive conditions; symbology becomes an ideological and interpretative act, once human expressiveness is beyond words, as it creates silence while one speaks. The character writes words that conceal other words, which are merely suggested, and the narrator uses his memory, once his discursive text can be presented as gapped, or as an excuse for oblivion. In this case, meanings can always be others and the (un)spokeable persists.
