Abstract

The impact of marital conflict on parenting it's one of the most consistent data as regards the literature of family studys. Accordingly, the investigation has sought to identify mechanisms that can mediate the association between the marital conflict and the relationship parents-children. However, despite empirical evidence demonstrated that dyadic coping of the couple elements finds itself strongly related to marital quality, and considering the systemic perspective that postulates the interdependence and mutual influence between the different family sub-systems, to date are not known published studies on the relationship of dyadic coping with parenting practices. Thus, this study aims to contribute to the literature on marital-parenting relationship, investigating the mediating role of dyadic coping on the association between marital conflict and parental emotional support. 202 Portuguese families have participated in the study (mother, father and child), married or cohabiting, with children aged between 12 and 21 years . One sociodemographic questionnaire was applied , the O'Leary Porter Scale (O'Leary & Porter, 1980), the Dyadic Coping Inventory (Vedes, Nussbeck, Bodenman, Lind, & Ferreira, 2013), o EMBU-P (Canavarro, 1996) e o EMBU-C (Canavarro & Pereira 2007b). The results are consistent with the existent literature, showing an indirect relationship between marital conflict and parental emotional support, mediated through dyadic coping, particularly supportive dyadic coping. The results also indicated the existence of a direct relationship between marital conflict and dyadic coping, including the supporter, the officer and the negative, as well as between supportive dyadic coping and parental emotional support.
