Abstract

Starting from a critical literature review on the autonomy concept, the present study adopts, as an alternative to the separation-individuation process from the parental figures, an integrative view of adolescent autonomy focused on the competences associated to autonomous behavior. The first objective of this study was to validate the Portuguese version of the Adolescent Autonomy Questionnaire (AAQ), a multidimensional measure of autonomy consisting of three subscales: Attitudinal Autonomy, Emotional Autonomy and Functional Autonomy. The factorial structure (through exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis) and reliability of the instrument were assessed. The second objective was to examine the effect of sex, adolescence stage, family structure and socioeconomic status on each autonomy dimension. Finally, the impact of the autonomy dimensions and Network Orientation on the Psychosocial Adjustment was investigated. Participants were 293 adolescents, both sexes, between 12 and 19 years old. Although the AAQ reveals acceptable psychometric properties some suggestions are made for future improvement of the instrument. Our results suggest that the development of Attitudinal Autonomy and Functional Autonomy is different for boys and girls. Both autonomy dimensions increase from the beginning to the end of adolescence, for males, while they stay stable for females. Emotional Autonomy seems to be a stable dimension for both genders, between 12 and 19 years old. These results do not confirm those found in the study with the original instrument and suggest the necessity of clear construct delimitation and the inclusion in autonomy studies of contextual variables like family structure or socioeconomic status. Our study also reveals a differential contribution to Psychosocial Adjustment of each autonomy dimension and Network Orientation variables. Attitudinal Autonomy is the best predictor of adjustment for boys, while Network Orientation and Emotional Autonomy, constructs that encompass relational aspects, are equally important for girls. The implications for practice and future investigations are presented.
