Abstract

The present research focuses on the study of the relation between attachment styles, defense mechanisms and defensive styles, in young adults. The aims of this study are: to analyze differences in the defensive styles in function of the type of attachment – Secure or Insecure (1); to analyze the relation between attachment styles and defensive styles (2); to analyze the relation between attachment dimensions and defensive styles (3); to analyze differences in the defense mechanisms in function of the attachment style (4); to analyze the relation between attachment dimensions and defense mechanisms (5). For this investigation 3 different instruments were used: a Sociodemographic questionnaire; The Experience in Close Relations Questionnaire translated and adapted in Portugal by Moreira and colleagues (2006); and finally the Defensive Style Questionnaire-40 (Andrews, Singh, & Bond, 1993). 110 subjects, over 18 years of age, male and female participated in this study. The results revealed that: (1) there were differences in the defensive styles in function of the type of attachment; (2) there were meaningful correlations between attachment styles and defensive styles; (3) there were meaningful correlations between attachment dimensions and defensive styles; (4) there were differences in multiple defense mechanisms in function of the attachment style; (5) there were significant correlations between the attachment dimensions and various defense mechanisms. These results are discussed in the light of the existing literature. Study limitations and suggestions for further investigations are presented.
