Relativismo semântico: além de o minimalismo e contextualismo

Abstract

Abstract: One of the most interesting disputes in philosophy of language is the dispute between Semantic Minimalism (SM) and Semantic Contextualism (SC). This dispute is apparently related with what determines the content of a given utterance or its truth conditions. Firstly I intend to show that the discussion between SM and SC is insignificant, merely verbal. I am going to argue for the dispute really being about the different use of the same fundamental concepts, where each theory uses vero-conditional content and semantics differently. After arguing for the discussion between SM and SC being merely verbal, I intend to present an alternative theory that is going to oppose significantly to both SC and SM; I am going to call such theory Semantic Relativism (SR). With SR it will be possible such opposition, since it is not committed with any particular conception of vero-conditional content nor of semantics and, thus, it may discuss with the minimalist and contextualist approaches, albeit differently. Inspite of the particular notion of veroconditional content that one chooses to use, SR has as its fundamental thesis the idea that the truth-conditions of any utterance have to be assessed relatively to a specific assessment system in order to be determined. Hence, I intend to revive one of the most popular disputes in Philosophy of Language by redirecting it as a dispute, not about what is semantic relevant or irrelevant, but instead concerning what contributes to determine the vero-conditional content of an utterance; the problem that truly matters.
