Hidrocarbonetos aromáticos policíclicos: concentração e (bio)disponibilidade

Abstract

The surveillance of marine environment in the last decades has been carried out with great emphasis on the evaluation chemical contaminants in different matrices (water, sediment and biota). In these, the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, PAHs (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) and their alkylated derivatives have been routinely monitored. This work allowed the development of detection and quantification of PAHs and their alkylated derivatives using the technique of Gas Chromatography coupled to Mass Spectrometry Detection (GC-MSD) and the concentration results have been compared with their (bio)availability in Spartina maritima plant. The majority of the sediments collected on Tagus’s River Estuary and all the sediments collected in Ria Formosa belongs, under the ordinance 1450/2007, to class 1 (clean dredged material) and class 2 (trace contamination on dredged material). The only stations where the sediment was slightly contaminated (class 3) were detected in Tagus’s River Estuary on station 4 (Seixal bay) and 17 (esteiro de Coina). The results obtained for the sum of PAHs showed that Tagus’s River Estuary presents a higher anthropogenic influence than Ria Formosa. The Spartina maritima plant showed the capacity to assimilate the compounds to which has been exposed (16 PAHs of US EPA) with a higher accumulation at the root, especially for the PAHs with carcinogenic potential. In the roots, the ΣCPAHs sum increased proportionally to the concentration in the solution to which they were exposed. These results seem to strengthen the hypothesis of accumulation of the most dangerous compounds to ecosystems at this plant’s root. It was also found that there is a saturation point at the roots, from where the accumulation starts to occur in the shoot.
