Suporte de ADSL2+ num Sistema GPON

Abstract

The present thesis contains the research project developed during the school year 2007/2008 to achieve the master's degree on Computer's Science held by the Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa. The research project was coordinated by the Professor Paulo Verissimo representing the Faculdade de Ciências and by the Engineer Rodrigo Brito representing Nokia Siemens Networks. The Projecto em Engenharia Informática discipline is focused on the development of a project in the host institution, in this case the Nokia Siemens Networks, particularly in the Research and Development department of the business unit Bro-adband Access. The project I was integrated in, described by this document, is entitled Suporte de ADSL2+ num Sistema GPON. Nokia Siemens Networks, Broadband Access business unit main activity is the development of network equipments, for companies that provide Internet access, the ISP - Internet Service Providers. The Broadband Access department develops various product lines, in particular the IP-DSLAM - Internet Protocol-Digital Subs-criber Line Access Multiplexer product and the GPON - Gigabit Passive Optical Networks product. The Internet access can be carried out by the IP-DSLAM equipments, where the clients connect to the ISP using the DSL - Digital Subscriber Line technology (based in copper lines) or with the new GPON equipments, where the clients (since buildings to houses) connect to the ISP using the GPON technology (based in optic bers). In this project, in a rst step I joined a training process that took almost three months and after that I dynamically participated in various phases of the Software Development process: Analysis, Design, Coding and Testing. In any of the described phases, even in the training stage, an intensive interaction with the physical equipment was performed, since the system configuration to the test of some relevant features used in the new product version.
