Abstract

In the present study, kin recognition ability and aggregation behavior were investigated in tadpoles of the Iberian green frog Pelophylax perezi (Seoane, 1885), in a series of laboratory experiments using a choice tank. Tadpoles reared in social isolation and with siblings were tested for their preference in associating with unfamiliar siblings or unfamiliar non-siblings and, thus, for their ability to discriminate kin. Recognition by prior association in rearing environment was also studied analyzing their ability to discriminate between familiar siblings and unfamiliar siblings. Finally, aggregation behavior was assayed recording the time spent near the stimulus compartment of the choice tank containing other tadpoles against an empty compartment, as a measure of preference for association with conspecifics. These aggregation tests were performed in both absence and presence of alarm conspecific cues, simulating a predator attack. Regardless of how test individuals were reared, P. perezi tadpoles did not display any differential responses to both stimulus groups, indicating there was neither kin discrimination nor recognition by prior association. Also in aggregation experiments, the random tadpole distribution in the choice tank revealed no preference for association with conspecifics. The results obtained in this thesis were discussed comparing with the observed in other Ranids species previously studied and concerning with their life histories.
