In times of pandemic, attention to the relationship and to the social and environmental aspects has required an investment towards integration between health care, social services and local communities. As emerges from the most recent literature on the subject, as well as from research conducted at the Vaccine HUB of the Policlinico di Palermo, the pandemic has stimulated the official recognition of the centrality of social and health care intervention in Italy. The social work has been able, at least in part, to develop a role as a connector of clinical and care pathways, a role that should also be enhanced in the post-pandemic period. As has become clear, the support of professional social workers can increase the health system’s capacity to respond adequately in terms of the community’s long-term wellbeing, by integrating health services with a broader range of information, prevention and support activities for the population.
