The essay traces the main lines of development of the libraries of the Franciscan Order after the very first centuries. In particular, the legislation on Franciscan libraries and the documentation transmitted to the Congregation of the Index at the end of the sixteenth century, now preserved in the Vatican Apostolic Library, are examined in order to understand the features of the common and individual libraries within the Order
