In this essay, we analyse causes, symbols, and slogans of the four revolts that broke out in Palermo between 1339 and 1351, the violent repression of the “armed dissidence” and the strategies for resolving dissent. In the background of the military, but also ideological, confrontation between the Aragonese and the Angevins, in the fourteenth century Sicily the revolts were often triggered by the lack of wheat, but their political causes were much more complex. In the island, the riots were fuelled by the unfavorable situation characterized by wars, monetary devaluations, famines, and pandemics that put Europe in crisis. Most of them broke out in the cities, the protagonists were the people and the knights, driven by different motivations and targets, but united by a “vertical solidarity”, that was very volatile.

Nell’articolo si analizzano le cause, i protagonisti, i simboli e gli slogan delle quattro rivolte scoppiate a Palermo tra il 1339 e il 1351, la repressione violenta della “dissidenza armata” e le strategie di ricomposizione Sullo sfondo dello scontro militare, ma anche ideologico, tra Aragonesi e Angioini, nella Sicilia del Trecento le rivolte furono spesso scatenate dalla penuria di grano, ma ebbero alla base cause politiche ben più complesse. Nell’isola le rivolte furono alimentate dalla congiuntura sfavorevole caratterizzata da guerre, svalutazioni monetarie, carestie e pandemie che misero in crisi l’intera Europa. La maggior parte scoppiò nelle città, i protagonisti furono il popolo e i cavalieri, spinti da motivazioni e obiettivi diversi, ma accomunati da una “solidarietà verticale” alquanto volatile.
