The publication presents the conclusive results of the research carried out by the Gruppo Flora Alpina Bergamasca (FAB) on the Orchidaceae, one of the first systematic groups to be investigated. About one hundred collaborators took part in the research, which lasted eleven years. The survey is a fruitful example of wide-ranging floristic research conducted by an institution of non-professionals, a practice that is still uncommon in Italy, but common in central and northern European countries. The book addressed the issue of biodiversity within the sustainable development paradigm, described the use of orchids as environmental indicators, and highlighted biotopes, rich in rare orchid species, that are particularly at risk of degradation and destruction.
