Abstract

Il testo raccoglie una serie di saggi di Manfred Beller sull'immagine stereotipica e sulla cultura dell'alterità tra 700 e 900, fornendo chiavi di lettura del testo odeporico su base storico-antropologica e psico-sociale. I due testi di apertura del libro hanno un carattere maggiormente teorico, che l'introduzione, a cura di Elena Agazzi, valorizza in collegamento con le singole esperienze letterarie. La Goethe-Zeit viene trattata come periodo particolarmente fecondo per il giudizio su usi e costumi di popoli confinanti con la Germania., ma non mancano escursioni verso epoche più recenti e terre più lontane. L'introduzione si pone innanzitutto il compito di definire il concetto di "immagine" e di fissare le coordinate secondo le quali si sviluppano le rappresentazioni dell'immaginario collettivo e individuale: la polarizzazione tra Nord e Sud, le teorie climatiche, la fisionomica, il carattere della descrizione e il genere della scrittura. Anche i topoi letterari più diffusi diventano oggetto di analisi.
