Abstract

È il 1943, Hannah Arendt andò in esilio negli Stati Uniti e scrisse queste pagine nella lingua della sua patria adottiva. Fino allo sterminio degli ebrei, il termine “rifugiato” significava un individuo costretto a cercare rifugio a causa di un atto o un’opinione politica. Ora sono quelli che sbarcano, privati delle risorse, in un nuovo paese e cercano aiuto presso i comitati dei rifugiati. Preferiscono chiamarli “nuovi arrivati” o “immigrati”, per contrassegnare la loro scelta. Perché si tratta soprattutto di dimenticare il passato: la sua lingua madre, la sua professione o, in questo caso, l’orrore dei campi. Hannah Arendt esprime la difficoltà di evocare questo passato molto recente. Niente storie d’infanzia o fantasmi, quindi, ma uno sguardo al futuro e, se possibile, predetto dal cielo piuttosto che inscritto nella terra. L’ottimismo maschera solo “la tristezza disperata degli assimilazionisti”. Anche laddove questi immigrati hanno trovato rifugio, vengono chiamati “bob”, o almeno sono percepiti come “cittadini di un paese nemico”. In questo testo vibrante e incredibilmente pioneristico, la crisi d’identità del popolo ebraico, qui descritta con tanta chiarezza, ricorda la difficile situazione di tutti i rifugiati.
