The Language of Mary Magdalene

Abstract

L'articolo tratta del linguaggio di Mary Magdalene, una "mystery-morality play" anonima, probabilmente scritta a cavallo tra il XV e il XVI secolo quando il Great Vowel Shift iniziò ad esercitare la sua influenza. Gli studiosi che hanno analizzato linguisticamente Mary Magdalene ritengono che la provenienza dialettale e geografica dell'opera sia nella regione delle East-Midlands, con caratteristiche tipiche del dialetto del Norfolk, Lynn o Lyncolnshire. Scopo dell'articolo è quindi verificare se questa ipotesi possa essere accettata. Per questo motiv, sono stati analizzati tutti gli aspetti fondamentali dell'ortografia e della fonetica che caratterizzano Mary Magdalene. Successivamente, si è cercato di analizzare attentamente quali varianti dialettali grafiche e fonologiche siano state usate dall'autore per scopi poetici. Da questa analisi risulta che Mary magdalene non può essere ricondotta a nessun dialetto particolare: sembra che l'autore abbia utilizzato una sorta di koinè letteraria, sfruttando tutte le possibilità inguistiche che i dialetti del Middle English avevano, per garantire all'opera la migliore forma poetica possibile
